Driving Tips

Driving at Night

La Khabine can be found in the private Chic Shack community, on a quiet, dead end road. If you are arriving at night, be aware that there are no street lights, and the area can be very dark.

Take Your Time

Highway 117 is the main highway to reach La Khabine. We know you’re excited to get here, but please be safe and make sure not to speed. There are police cars along this highway who frequently watch for speeding vehicles.

Taking the Backroad

For our friends coming up from the south, via Highway 323. When you get to the small town of Brébeuf, you will come to an intersection with a few antique shops on either side of the street. If you turn right, you will stay on Highway 323 and eventually reach Highway 117. If you turn left onto Rang des Collines, you will reach La Khabine a little faster, but you will be travelling down a scenic, curvy, country road. We recommend taking this way during the spring, summer, and fall, but would advise caution in the winter months.

Extra Pillows and Blankets

Should you require an extra pillow or blanket, they are located at the top of the closet in the smaller of the two bedrooms.

Firepit (Spring, Summer, Fall)

We love sitting around the fire and enjoying the stars, some good conversations, and maybe a drink or two. Here’s a few things to remember before you enjoy a cozy outdoor fire.

  • The firepit area can be enjoyed in the spring, summer, and fall. In the winter, the path to the firepit is not maintained.
  • The town of La Conception requires that all outdoor fires be contained. To comply, we have a beautiful Iron Embers Pyramid firepit.
  • Remove the cover from firepit and store it on the front porch.
  • When you’re finished enjoying your fire, let the fire die down on its own and pour some water over the embers to ensure that it is out.
  • Do not put the cover back on, even if there are no visible embers.
  • It is best to put the cover back on the morning after having your fire.

Garbage and Recycling

  • At the end of your stay, please place your garbage and recycling bags in the outside bin, located just outside the kitchen patio door beside the BBQ.
  • There are extra garbage and recycling bags located under the kitchen sink, if needed.

Locked Areas

Lock IconSome cabinets at La Khabine are locked. These cabinets are marked with locked stickers near the cupboard handles. Please do not try to force entry into these cupboards:

  • The two cupboards above the fridge.
  • The left and right doors of the dresser in the bedroom.
  • The two lower-left cupboards in the bathroom.
  • The door to the electrical panel is locked. If you require entry, please message us for instructions.

Pets

If you are bringing pets, please feel free to use these included items.

  • Crate: Located in the hallway closet. Guests must crate their pet if leaving them alone in the house. We recommend bringing a familiar blanket from home to put on the bottom of the crate so your pet is comfortable.
  • Food/Water Dishes: Located in the kitchen cupboard, above the bowls and plates are two bowls for pets. Please leave these in the dishwasher at the end of your stay.

Sauna

Rules

  1. Please remove all footwear before entering the sauna. Only bare feet inside please.
  2. Do not bring any food or liquids, other than water, into the sauna.
  3. Do not smoke, vape, exercise, or drink any alcoholic beverages in the sauna.
  4. Do not pour anything on the heater rocks other than water, or clean snow.

We are extremely excited to offer our guests the use of our private, outdoor, cedar barrel sauna! Please help us keep our sauna in the best shape possible and follow these instructions so you and other guests can enjoy it for years to come!

Light Switch

To turn on the light inside the sauna, flip the red switch upwards to the on position. It is located on the right side, on the outside of the sauna.

Sauna Operation

The heater inside the sauna has two dials at the bottom. The one on the right is the temperature, and the one on the left is a timer.

Setting the Temperature

  • The temperature can be adjusted by turning the thermostat dial. Clockwise to raise the temperature, and counter-clockwise to lower it.
  • Please note that the colder it is outside, the longer it takes for the sauna to heat up. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes for the sauna to fully heat up.

Setting the Timer (Immediate Start Up)

  • If you want the heater to begin heating immediately, turn the timer dial clockwise into the black “heating zone” and choose 1 to 3.
  • Whichever number you pick in the black heat zone is the amount of hours that the heater will run for before shutting itself off.

Setting the Timer (Delayed Start Up)

  • If you want the heater to delay starting up, turn the timer dial into the white “delay zone” and choose 1 to 9.
  • Whichever number you pick in the white delay zone is the amount of hours that the heater will delay before turning itself on and begin heating itself (it will shut itself off after heating up for 3 hours).
Sauna dial diagram

How to Enjoy the Sauna

  1. Take a shower.
  2. Remove clothing, and any footwear, and wear a loose towel or comfortable bathing suit.
  3. Enjoy the sauna for 10 to 15 minutes or until perspiration begins.
  4. Take a cool shower and relax with a water or juice for the same time that you spent in the sauna.
  5. Repeat the process another time if you like 🙂

    • and more…
  • Please feel free to log into your own accounts to make use of these services.
  • Don’t forget to log out of your accounts before you leave.
  • Please do not alter the settings on any of the smart TVs.
  • We all know remotes are easy to lose, so please keep the remotes in their respective rooms and put them back on a table before you leave.

Music

There is a Sony Bluetooth speaker in the living room that you can connect to to play your favourite music. Hold the On button for 3 seconds to begin pairing your device (the light beside the Bluetooth symbol will blink when in pairing mode).

Snow and Ice Removal

Snow

During the winter months, La Khabine becomes a beautiful, snowy winter-wonderland! If enough snow falls during your stay, a truck will arrive the next morning to clear the driveway. If you are present when the truck arrives and could move your car out of the driveway, it would be very appreciated so that they are able to clean the entire area. In addition, another team will be by in the morning to clear the snow from the driveway to the house and to clear off the deck.

Ice

Occasionally, the driveway and the path to the house can become slippery with ice. Beside the porch steps is a large black bin that is filled with salt. Please use the scoop inside the bin to sprinkle salt along the pathway and stairs. This will help melt the ice and to ensure you don’t slip.

Temperature

Thermostats

  • La Khabine is heated by baseboard heaters and cooled by an air conditioner that are connected to Wi-fi enabled thermostats.
  • Simply press the up or down arrows on the thermostats to adjust the temperature.
  • Each bedroom, the hallway, the bathroom, and the living room have their own individual thermostats.
  • The minimum temperature each baseboard heater thermostat can go to is 16° Celsius, and a maximum of 26° Celsius.

Ceiling Fan

  • The ceiling fan is controlled by a remote control.
  • The remote is located in the hallway, on the left wall, right before you enter the kitchen area.
  • Please make sure to turn off the fan and its light and to return the remote to its location on the wall before you leave.

Air Conditioner

  • The air conditioner is controlled by a Wi-fi enabled thermostat.
  • The thermostat is located in the hallway, on the left wall, right before you enter the kitchen area.
  • The minimum temperature that the air conditioner thermostat can go to is 18° Celsius, and a maximum of 26° Celsius.
  • NOTE: The air conditioning is disabled during the winter season, however the unit will be running as a heat pump.

Washroom

Facecloths

Please only use the provided dark grey facecloths to remove makeup.

Towels

  • La Khabine does its best to be as eco-friendly as possible. Please help us and reuse your towels if you can.
  • Please place all used towels on the shower floor before you leave.

Toilet

We are on a septic system, so please do not flush anything down the toilet besides toilet paper.

Wood Stove

La Khabine is equipped with a beautiful Stûv wood stove for your enjoyment. For your safety, and to help us keep our wood stove in the best condition, please read the following information:

  • Always use the driest wood possible. There is a wood holder beside the fireplace that will be stocked when you arrive. You can replenish this wood with wood from the front porch if needed.
  • Beside the fireplace is a basket that contains:
    • Kindling
    • Glove
    • Lighter
    • Poker
    • Fire starters
    • Metal handle

Starting a fire

  1. Slide the damper lever all the way to the right so the fire gets air.
  2. To unlock and open the door, please only use the provided metal handle and insert it into the hole on the door. Turn it clock-wise to open.
  3. Add 4-6 pieces of kindling in a pyramid shape and then add 1 or 2 bigger logs over top.
    • Don’t overcrowd the stove with wood.
    • Lean the pieces of wood so that when they burn, they will fall to the back or side of the stove – not towards the front where the glass is.
  4. Place a single fire starter underneath the kindling and use the lighter to ignite the fire starter. Please note that the fire starter can take a minute or so of continuous heat to ignite.
  5. Once the fire starter is lit, close the door almost all of the way. This will help give the fire more air so that it burns better.
  6. Let the fire build. After 30 minutes or so, you can close the door completely by using the metal handle and turning it counter clock-wise to lock. You may have to start a few new fires to build up a bed of hot coals.
  7. If you close the door and you find the fire becomes smoky inside, unlock the door so that it can get more air.

Smoke

If you notice smoke escaping the wood stove from around the door or anywhere on the pipe above the stove:

  • Open the double door that leads to the deck. It only needs to be open a little.

Smoke may escape if you are running the wood stove during low pressure weather, such as damp, rainy or snowy days. The outside pressure is low enough that it makes it difficult for the smoke to escape out of the chimney. Opening the door just a little creates enough air flow in the house to fix this.

If this happens, please feel free to contact us and we can walk you through the steps to getting this fixed.
